Any advice? What works for you?

I'm talking about animal messes on carpets.

Our FoxDog, Reyna, is getting very old indeed and can be a bit incontinent. So I'm often cleaning up pee messes. And the cats are always throwing up. Here's what I've found works, at least a bit:

Pee: Soak it all up with a towel. Then douse the area with water and soak it again with another clean towel. Repeat. Then spray with febreze.

Vomit: If it's not a hair ball, and has stomach acid in it, I clean up the mess, douse with water and then soak it up and then sprinkle a layer of baking soda, sometimes quite thick, over the area. The soda counteracts the acid and lifts the vomit color up. Then after the soda is mostly dry, I vacuum it up. This works pretty well.

For hair balls I just clean them up with water and febreze. I've noticed they don't have the acid in them that true vomit does.

For poo: If it's not messy I clean it up, clean up the area and spray, you guessed it, febreze. If it's messy it requires more. Generally poo has acid so I use the baking soda and scrub, scrub scrub.

You'll note I don't use cleaning detergents etc. This is because I've noticed they leave residue in the carpet that attacts dirt.

The other thing I do is have the carpets cleaned every 6 months to a year.

So what do you do?

Haven't had to deal with the vomit or hair balls, but the occassional urine accident, after soaking up all we can, we spray a bit of carpet shampoo mixed with water (in a spray bottle) and scrub. Soak up again. Then use something called Odoban...spray, then towel off and dry.
