Reyna, the FoxDog Medieval Costuming

Sewing, sewing, sewing!

Costuming: a Peculiar Passion

You don't have to like costuming to be a part of the SCA, but it sure helps. It took Renart and I (Aelianora) several years of being involved before we actually started to make our own costumes. This was partly my fault, as I had to get everything 'ready' before I was willing to start.

Costuming is fun, although it often makes one want to pull out one's tresses. I really enjoy drafting patterns and sewing the clothes. I hate cutting them out though, so that's often what Renart does. Because I am cruel, I made Renart learn how to sew his own clothing. Perhaps that's not really cruelty, because now he can have the pride of saying about some of his things that he made them himself.

My costumes are all 16th Century. Perhaps someday I will branch out, but right now I'm disinclined to do so, although those earlier Italian Ren dresses look nice, and an Imperial Roman outfit might be comfy. Renart's costumes vary. His earlier efforts are 16th C, but he quickly settled into the more comfortable Norse/Norman era (don't they all?). He is now quite adept at making and decorating his own tunics.

Our first costumes: Elizabethan Lord and Lady. This was quite a challenge, as they were made very quickly.
